Fertilizing & Repotting Pond Plants
Most aquatic plants are dormant during the winter months. Trim back all dead and dying material to keep it from decaying in the pond water.

Many of these plants also may need repotting every year or two depending on their growing habits. For example, Water Lilies will typically need to be repotted every two years. Check the Water Plants section for more information.

Whether repotting or not, you should fertilize your plants at least yearly in the spring, around March or April, just as the new growth is beginning to appear. You should check with your local dealer for a time release fertilizer specifically formulated for aquatic plants. One good example is Aquatic-Tabs.

Pond Water Refill Timer -
Keep from Killing Your Koi!

This issue was brought up many times during our 2005 Pond Tour. This year we have heard of at least 15 cases of pond owners killing their entire pond population by forgetting to turn off the water when they were refilling their ponds. This happens so often, and yet the solution is simple. Just add a timer to your garden faucet, attach your hose to the timer, and you’re set. No more forgetting the running water. One of the good timers we’ve found is the Gardena T120, made in Germany and available through Amazon.com, and sells for about $30

When you’re adding water to your pond, turn the timer to the amount of time it takes to fill it and you can walk away and forget about it. It will turn off automatically. Now all you have to do is remember to add a declorinator and no more dead fish due to Chlorine or Chloramine poisoning.
